Kofi Annan Resigns  as Syria Peace Envoy
Kofi Annan resigned as the UN Peace envoy to Syria on 2 August 2012 by complaining the international community had not done enough to support his bid to persuade Bashar al-Assad to accept a peace plan. His term as  UN peace interlocutor was set to expire on 31 August 2012. Annan was appointed the UN-Arab League Peace envoy to Syria in February 2012. A formidable diplomat Annan was assigned with the task to explore for the peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis and secure a peaceful transition of the regime.Mr Annan also complained that "continuous finger-pointing and name-calling" in the UN Security Council had hindered his attempts to implement his so-called "six point peace plan"

Naveen Patnaik to expand his cabinet todayThe Chief Minister of Odisha  Naveen Patnaik  reshuffled his Cabinet Ministry on 2 August 2012.  He dropped Five dropped five influential ministers and inducted 9, including six new faces, in a major reshuffle of his council of ministers   dropped Ministers are ; Ghadai, Prafulla Samal, Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Pushpendra Singhdeo and Pratap Jena.The Six new Ministers appointed by the Chief Minister of the State are:-Pratap Keshari Deb, Subrat Tarai, Rajanikant Singh, Sarojini Hembram, Arun Kumar Sahu and Rabi Narayan Nanda.While Patnaik had been carefully examining the whole issue since June, ruling BJD MLAs were lobbying hard in their bid to secure a berth in the council of ministers.Among the strong contenders for ministership are senior legislators and former ministers Damodar Rout, AU Singh Deo and Bijayashri Routray, the sources said.

Xiaojun Rewrites Records on Way to Gold
China’s Lu Xiaojun  broke two weight lifting world records on his way to winning gold on 1 August 2012. He sets a world record by 1 kg with over all weight of 379 kg across the two styles of Olympic lift.The total included a World record snatch of 175kg.
